Manchester United's Ralf Rangnick puzzled over mishandling of Middlesbrough's loss

Ralf Rangnick said Manchester United was solely responsible for their FA Cup fourth-round exit against Middlesbrough, despite saying the goal they conceded should not have stopped.

  • United lost 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Friday. Anthony Ilanga missed the main penalty kick in the penalty shootout after Cristiano Ronaldo missed the penalty kick in the original time.

  • Matt Crooks scored the contested equalizer for Middlesbrough after Duncan Watmore appeared to handle the ball in the build, but after Rangnick was equally upset by his side's finish.

  • "In the first half we should have gone 3-0 up easily and in the second half we had chances as well. We should have won the match in regulation time. What happened today can happen with penalties."

  • "Incredibly frustrating, we should have won and finished the game in the first half."

  • Ilanga, 19, was forced to take a penalty partly due to the absence of Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard from the squad.

  • Cavani took extra leave after playing for Uruguay in the World Cup qualifiers, while Rangnick said Lingard had requested leave to "clear his mind" after a proposed move to Newcastle United failed to meet deadline day.

  • Lingard later posted on social media that he missed training on club advice, but asked again on Friday night that Rangnick appeared to stick to his version of events.

  • "Eddie played for Uruguay on Wednesday [morning], with plane delays and travel arrangements that didn't make sense, he wouldn't have been in the team anyway," Rangnick said.

  • “And with Jesse, I told them my knowledge and my knowledge, and of course I would have loved Jesse to be on the team.

  • "We were an off-field player on the team sheet today, so why was he allowed four or five days off?

  • "I would have loved him to have been in the team, but it wasn't, so it makes no sense to talk about players who weren't there."

  • Middlesbrough stunned the football world on Friday when the club eliminated Manchester United from the FA Cup on penalties at Old Trafford.

  • Middlesbrough's victory came after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time that left the score tied with one goal each.

  • Jadon Sancho started the scoring for United when his 25th-minute winner passed Middlesbrough goalkeeper Joe Lumley to give Manchester United a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

  • Manchester United lost the lead in the 64th minute when Middlesbrough's Matt Crooks equalized with a controversial goal that appeared to hit the hand of Duncan Watmore, who helped in the scoring attempt. As a rule, the goal was confirmed because Watmore was not the scorer.

  • After 30 minutes of extra time, the competition went to a penalty shoot-out, with both teams sending the first seven shots. After Lee Peltier scored his eighth penalty for Middlesbrough, Anthony Ilanga sent the penalty off the crossbar to send United home in a shock defeat.

  • With the defeat, Manchester United continued their cup drought, with the last win being the 2017 Europa League. Now they will have to wait a little longer to break the streak after Friday night's surprise.
