McDonald's is an American fast food company, founded in 1940 as a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald's, in San Bernardino, California, USA. They renamed their company a hamburger kiosk and later turned it into a franchise, where the Golden Arches logo was introduced in 1953 in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1955, businessman Ray Kroc joined the company as a franchise agent and went on to buy the chain from McDonald Brothers. McDonald's former headquarters was in Oak Brook, Illinois, but moved its international headquarters to Chicago in June 2018

  • Brothers Richard and Maurice MacDonald opened the first McDonald's restaurant at 1398 North E Street at West 14th Street in San Bernardino, California, on May 15, 1940. The brothers introduced the Speedy Service System in 1948 and increasingly embraced the principles of modern fast food.
  • White Castle's predecessor was in place more than two decades ago. The original McDonald's mascot was a chef's hat on a burger called "Speedy". In 1962, the Golden Bows replaced the Speedee as the universal mascot. The mascot, the Clown Ronald MacDonald, was introduced in 1965.
