Ukraine's first lady Olena Zheleska condemned the massacre of Russians

  • First Lady Olena Zelenska Condemns 'Assassination'
  • Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska issued an emotional statement on the Russian invasion, in which she condemned the "mass murder" of civilians in the country.
  • She focused on the child victims and mentioned the names of three children killed in the attack.

  • She said that Ukraine wanted peace but would defend its borders and identity.
  • The whereabouts of Ms. Zelenska, 44, are unknown, and her husband, President Volodymyr Zelensky, says her family is a target of Russian forces.
  • In an open letter posted on the Ukrainian president's website Tuesday night in English, International Women's Day, Zelenska said she had received numerous interview requests and her letter was a response.

  • The invasion, she said, "was impossible to believe. Our country was peaceful and our cities, towns and villages were full of life."

  • "In fact, it is a mass murder of Ukrainian civilians," she added, despite Russian efforts to portray it as a "special operation."

  • “Perhaps the most horrific and destructive thing about this invasion is the child victims.

  • “Eight-year-old Alice died on the streets of Okhtyrka while her grandfather was trying to protect her. Or Polina, from Kiev, who died in the bombing with her parents.

  • “Arseny, 14, was hit in the head by debris and could not be saved as an ambulance was unable to reach him in time due to the severe fires.

  • "When Russia says it 'doesn't wage war on civilians,' I first say the names of these murdered children."

  • Ms. Zelenska said dozens of babies born in recent weeks have never known peace.

  • But she said Russian President Vladimir Putin underestimated Ukraine, its people and its patriotism.

  • "While the Kremlin's defenders boasted that the Ukrainians would greet them with flowers as a savior, they were rebuffed by Molotov cocktails," she added.

  • She also thanked people around the world for their support and called on the West to "close the sky and we will handle the war on Earth ourselves."
  • The first lady ended by calling on the media to "continue to show the truth."
  • "If we don't stop Putin, who is threatening to start a nuclear war, there will be no safe place in the world for any of us. We will win. Because of our unity. Unity towards love for Ukraine."

Who is Olena Zelenska
